Days later, hailstones and strong winds again lashed the Mediterranean into a fury. To the north, the mountaintops of the Pyrenees were dusted with snow. Clouds were drifting by fast. The thin mountain air cut like a blade. Another tramontana on the way.

As if to add to the difficulties, I received a letter from the examining magistrate informing me that in my home country, I had been convicted for fraud, in absentia, and sentenced to two years in prison. An extradition request was filed through Interpol. My brain sizzled. I was dizzy, as if I’d been drinking too much, and wanted to get out. I needed some distraction. Ana noticed my thoughtful gaze in the bedroom mirror. She had bought a bottle of pink Perelada Brut Rosado sparkling wine for Dalí, and I told her I wanted to explore Perelada. Ana warned me that Perelada is not a town, not even a village. It’s just a vineyard, that is to say, a castillo surrounded by lush gardens. Still, I insisted, and she promised to get me in on one of their famous surrealist nights in the castle’s bodega. Wind howled and thunder rumbled and a black screen of overlapping clouds positioned itself in between the Pyrenees and the churning sea, like a wall of steel. The bottom of my pool was covered with dead rats, inches of yellow beach sand, and broken shells. The bell high up in the ruins of the bell tower tolled all through the night.
